January, 2024 photo contest winner!!!This beautiful photo of a crown nose ray taken by Kate McGurk.
While born a Jersey girl, Kate has always been a Florida girl at heart. Moving to Florida four and half years ago was a dream come true. She started dabbling in photography because of her labradoodle pup, Maci, with no idea that she would end up photographing wild life. Now it has become one of her passions. There is so many awesome photography opportunities here in Florida – it’s a photographer’s paradise. The Sebastian Inlet is one of her favorite places to frequent. Kate was in the right place at the right time, to the rays misfortune, of photographing it. A fisherman had hooked the ray. Kate’s good friend, a wildlife rescuer, had the fisherman walk down the beach to where his gear was so that it could be set free. Upon his return, he was just going to cut the line but her friend said no way, she removed the hook and set the ray free. While the circumstances were not ideal, this is a once in a life time photo opportunity. Thank you Kate for this amazing photo and your friend for safely releasing this beautiful crown nose ray! |
